EU AI Act Timeline — Key Obligations

August 2024 — Act Entered Into Force The EU AI Act became law. The compliance clock started for all organisations within scope.

February 2025 — Prohibited Practices Ban AI systems classified as prohibited under Article 5 — including social scoring, real-time biometric surveillance in public spaces, and subliminal manipulation — became unlawful—immediate cessation of prohibited practices required.

August 2025 — GPAI Model Obligations Transparency, capability evaluation, and systemic risk management requirements for general-purpose AI models entered into application. Organisations developing or deploying GPAI models are now in scope.

August 2026 — High-Risk System Obligations Full conformity assessment, technical documentation, human oversight, and post-market monitoring obligations for high-risk AI systems listed in Annex III enter into application. This is the most operationally demanding compliance deadline in the Act.

August 2027 — Embedded High-Risk Systems Obligations for high-risk AI systems embedded in products covered by existing EU product safety legislation enter into full application.
